It takes recorded auction sales of your BMW's generation within 10,000 miles of your mileage and shows their median. The window widens to 15,000 and then 20,000 miles only when fewer than 12 sales fall inside it. It uses sales from the last 24 months to follow current pricing, and you can narrow it by color, gearbox, body and trim.
From 18,374 completed sales on Bring a Trailer and Cars & Bids, each a public record with photographs, mileage and a final price. Asking prices are not used. Special variants, race and project cars, branded titles, parts and museum-mileage examples are excluded so they cannot skew a median.
90 BMW generations have enough recorded sales, with the E46 M3, E46 330i and E36 M3 the most sold. Choose the model and year and the tool finds the generation; where that year was built in more than one generation, it asks which. Each generation also has a value page with its prices by mileage, color and gearbox.
Because a median of a handful of sales would mislead. If there are too few sales within 20,000 miles of your mileage, or too few that match your filters, the tool says so; setting color, gearbox, body or trim back to Any uses more sales. With fewer than 5 sales in the last 24 months it uses every sale on record and says it has.
